Workshops

 

Dave Simon's Rock School is offering several workshops this summer to help you refine your skills!

Workshops run from June 5-August 25.

The cost is $30 per class ($15 if you are already enrolled in a band or private lessons at the Rock School.)

Placement is determined by student skill assessment score and teacher recommendation.

Guitar/Bass Workshop I

Mondays, 4-5 PM

Maximum of 4 students per class

Workshop I is for the beginning/intermediate level guitarist/bassist.  In Workshop I students learn how to play as a guitar section as they alternate between lead and rhythm guitar. 

 

Guitar/Bass Workshop II

Tuesdays, 4-5 PM

Maximum of 4 students per class

Workshop II is for intermediate/advanced level guitarists.  Students continue to alternate between lead and rhythm guitar, but more emphasis is put on improvisation, composition, and soloing skills.

 

Jam and Improv Band Workshop

Wednesdays, 4-5 PM

2-4 students per class

For intermediate and advanced level musicians

In the Jam and Improv Band Workshop, students learn how to develop improvisational skills beyond playing solos.  Focus will be placed on blues structures as well as free form jams.  This workshop also includes classroom time devoted to music theory, which is essential to being successful in an improvisational setting.

 

Songwriting I Workshop

Mondays, 5-6 PM

Prerequisites: basic guitar or piano skills

Songwriting I is for the beginning songwriter.  In this workshop students study song form, chord patterns, and lyric writing.  They will also engage in song analysis and composing basic song structures.

Songwriting II Workshop

Tuesdays, 5-6 PM

Prerequisites: basic guitar or piano skills; basic singing skills; completion of Songwriting I or recommendation from a band director

Songwriting II is for students who have some experience with songwriting.  This workshop will focus on songwriting exercises and writing techniques.  Students will be expected to play guitar or piano and sing in this workshop.

Vocal Workshop I

Saturdays, 3-4 PM

Vocal Workshop I is for the beginning singer.  Here, students will learn the basics of good singing techniques in a comfortable group environment.  They will be given the opportunity to sing for each other in order to develop confidence in their singing ability.

Vocal Workshop II

Mondays, 6-7 PM

Prerequisites: Vocal Workshop I, private voice study through Rock School, or recommendation from Dave or Tracy

Vocal Workshop II is for the advanced singer.  Students will continue to develop their singing technique while also learning to harmonize with others.  This workshop is especially great for band singers and those who want to learn the basic components of vocal harmony while healthfully training the voice.
